May 14, 2012 - Lake Almanor Report
Courtesy James Huffmon
Headed to Lake Almanor this morning with Dave Johns and was greeted
by perfect conditions!
Surface water temperature was 61 at 8am when we launched and had warmed
to 63 by 11am.
We
boated 10 Smallmouth Bass between 2-1/4 and 4lbs. They were all males
who had just moved up into the stump fields and gravel beds.

Water clarity was about 9ft so we were able to see every fish we caught.
I caught mine by drop shotting a Prizm Shad Roboworm and Dave caught his
on a 6” Camo worm on a 1/4oz darter head.
The action is just going to get better from here!

Take Mom fishing this weekend. Fishing at Frenchman Lake has been
great this past week. Had a good report on the fly fishing from
Truckee River Outfitters guide, Rob Anderson. His party caught and
released 47 beautiful rainbows caught float tubing, using flies on
the north end of the lake. Another party caught 14 lbs of fish using
Salmon, Peach and Rainbow Powerbait. Bank fishermen using
nightcrawlers are getting limits also.
Gary Bonano of Cold Springs, NV reported that he
and his fishing partner, Ral Klundby of Portola, CA have been
catching many rainbows off the bank in the coves above Lunker Point.
Gary reports that the fish have an attitude, so try your luck with
Cone Heads, Copper Johns, or black Copper Johns.
Lures you should try either trolling or casting:
Panther Martins, yellow with black spots - and frog-type Kastmasters.
Water temperature is cold as we have had cool nights. Fish should
not be too deep.

Surface
temps averaging around @ 53.5 degrees
Clarity
continues to improve to 12 ft..
4490.88
Ft. Elevation,
1,031,299
acre feet storage.
The north
fork of the Feather is pouring in water, high and fast.
The
diversion Dam is rerouting some of that addition flow around Chester.
Bailey
Creek is flowing strong, along with several season creeks and streams
around both basins.
For the
second year in a row, Lake Almanor is full.
It took
very little run off to “Top Off” the lake...And the main runoff has just
started.
The
difference between last year and this year is, Last year we got record
snowfall. Cold runoff poured into the basin from every river, creek,
stream, and ditch.
So much
cold water, it took deep into summer before surface temps began to rise,
the hex hatch was a dud.
This
year. PG&E water managers cut back on the amount of water released,
allowing Lake Almanor to retain higher winter levels of stabilized
water, temperature wise.
Also this
winter Lake Almanor did not ice over thick, we had some thin ice that
melted away daily during the entire winter, which was much lighter and
warmer than 2010.
That
being said, Right now, conditions are just perfect.
Lake Almanor Fishing Report 5/4/2012
Doesn't
take long to get hooked up when conditions are like they are now. Many
areas are very good. It’s a toss up on where you might want to fish.
Here's some good bets.
Trout
and Salmon are still active in the Almanor West area..yea we
caught a couple of 3 lb. Kings, between the Browns and Rainbows that
were running from 2 to 3.2 lbs..
Salmon
are active near Canyon Dam and at the Snag, hitting Anchovy tails,W/Pro-Cure
Super Herring Gel suspended off the bottom, and a few are always caught
trolling.
Fishing
pressure is up on the weekends and most boats are trolling dodgers and
flashers in the deeper areas, while lead core guys are getting hits in
the top 15 ft. of water.
Rec. 1
to the A-frame has been Brown Town. Inside the moorings smelt are
pressed along the shore line and Browns are holding them in there.
Ripping smelt patters, like Rapalas, Pin Minnows, or Trophy Sticks have,
at times, caught the bigger fish.
Rec.
2, Fish are rolling inside, and outside the log boom, got 2 hits
from the dock before even launching the boat.
USFS
ramp, launch there and just start trolling west. Rigged Needlefish
or shiners down 6 ft. early, dropping down 10 ft. after 9:00 am
producing mostly Browns and Rainbows, but the Salmon are still in the
hunt too.
Also
threaded naked crawlers along the moorings..real slow.
Hamilton Branch flows into the lake have fish stacked out front
about 500 yds. and below 30 ft.,Rainbows and Browns, use attractors to
help them find breakfast. Strike Master Dodgers from Seps work best.
Lake
Cove to the Dorado, this area is always a worth a pass...when they
are ” in there”, it’s the best..And they are in there.
Insect
hatch are much more advanced on the east shore drawing in feeders..watch
for the swallows working the surface, fish with and around them.
Hamilton
Branch is running fast and clear, Salmon hitting white white jigs near
the power house, and the east shore near the big Bennington estate..(The
big huge house along the east shores south end.)
Trollers
check you lines for shaker Salmon. These little plants are aggressive
but to small to pop releases.

Frenchman Lake
Report

Those
"happy campers" and fishermen came out last
week for the April 28th stream
opener. They were not disappointed.
Not many
reports on the streams, but the lake was
very productive using nightcrawlers and
trolling "Jake’s Lures" or other black type
lures. Green frog lures are also doing well.
Larry
Mitchell of Reno, caught a nice 17 ½"
rainbow - 2.66 lbs near the dam with
crawlers.
The best
flies to use right now are olive or black
wooly buggers. Fish near the dam.
Also,
float tubers are using various flies such as
copper johns, beadhead, prince nymphs or any
weighted nymph up on the north end of
Frenchman Lake.
Campgrounds open are Chilcoot, Frenchman,
Spring Creek, and Big Cove. Fee is $21.00
per night.

Clearing for Friday

The Fishing conditions are

Many areas around the

really determine which spot is better.
Canyon Dam,
north along the east shore to Lake Cove.
Trolling silver Speedy Shiners, or fast
action Needlefish in Pearl, Browns Rainbows
and a occasional King.
Lake Cove
area, Early morning the fish are well off
shore feeding on insects. Early evening the
Salmon are moving closer to shore, and
hitting white jigs on the drift near the
Bennington Estate. Closer to dark, bigger
the Salmon.
Dave, Owner of
Lake Haven Resort, said “After
boating 7 kings in the lb.. range, a bigger
fish broke us off!” estimated over 5 lb..
East shore, Lake
Cove and the Dorado areas are still
happening.
Rec. 1 to Bunell
point kicked out a couple Browns pushing 4
lbs., off 04 Seps Silver Prism Dodger/Pearl
Needlefish combos rigged 20 ft. down.
A oldie but a goodie.
My
other buddies, Scott and Rich, wacked them
good over from the Almanor West peninsula
into the airport flats areas. Again Rainbows
and Browns a few over 3 lbs..
There are hitting
hard, producing solid takedowns, popping
releases, jumping, taking line, all that
good stuff.
My last 2 Days
trolling Almanor West produced limits
by 11:30 am. Averaging 10 in the box, a few
LDR’s and a couple “One Pump Wonders”
Mostly Rainbows,
Browns and couple Salmon. (LDR, Long
Distance Release)
Watch your lines
there are some small salmon scattered all
over the lake. They are not heavy enough to
pop the release. You don’t want to be
dragging one of them around.
ALMANOR KING, Channel
69, gimmie a shout if yer coming out.
